Waukesha County Sheriff David Beth said investigators from multiple agencies are looking into a crash that injured 10 people in Sunday’s Roseville USA Half Marathon and 10-mile race.
The crash happened as a car ran a stop sign at Nichols Road and Pleasant Ridge Drive, police said.
Authorities said several of the people were on bikes.
A witness, John Hurt, told WITI news that he saw a man racing toward the race route in an SUV and that there was a dead end on his right.
Police said the driver of the car did not have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and was racing and traveling the wrong way down the road. The cause of the crash was due to “inattention of the driver of the vehicle that struck the bikers, and the lack of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and his/her failure to stop at the stop sign at the intersection,” police said.
The driver was cited for reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street.
