It’s been 22 years since Larry Hoover was executed by authorities, but the unsolved murder still affects his supporters, including Kanye West.
Kanye appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night, where he opened up about the death of the prominent Chicago gang leader, who died in 1992 of a gunshot wound to the chest.
“They tried to kill me and Lil Wayne in June of ’99,” Kanye said, referencing reports that they were attacked by men in balaclavas while outside a Chicago recording studio. “By September, I was working with Jay Z and everybody was kind of waiting for it to happen and then, of course, in that process, it happened.”
Kanye later told Kimmel that he had “buried his head in the sand” for years about the incident, before deciding that “you gotta get up.”

Kanye said that when he approached rappers on his team, like Chance the Rapper and Dr. Dre, they all figured it out together.
“There’s not one person that didn’t ask me ‘How did it get to you? What did you do? It’s crazy. Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you take me and Chance with you? You already know the reason,’” Kanye said.
The fundraiser launched on Wednesday night and will continue until Saturday to raise money for Larry Hoover’s family.
