Mexican authorities have found 600 Central American migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador hidden in two trailers inside a livestock store on the outskirts of Veracruz.
The vehicles were abandoned on the country’s northern edge after a driver failed to obtain official inspection documents from Veracruz’s security office, a police spokesman told reporters.
Police located the vehicles on Thursday morning and transported the migrants to a safe location, the spokesman said.
No details were immediately available on the migrants’ identities or their state of health.
Five suspects were arrested for reportedly facilitating the migrants’ escape by providing information to the traffickers.
More than 40,000 immigrants have attempted to cross the border into Texas over the past six months, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
According to CBP, a majority of the migrants attempting to enter Texas — 98% — come from Honduras, followed by Guatemala and El Salvador.
